5-Month project with a team of 7

Beat Eat is an action/QTE Mobile game with a food theme.

The goal is to fight against food through different themes in order to cook it.

The game is characterized by a simplicity of action and an offbeat universe.

Design for Mobile

Mobile Touch

The first few enemies are quite simple and only require the player to press the right thumbnail, but later on, the thumbnails become more complex and require the player to perform touch actions such as swiping or pinching.

Levels

In order to unlock the next levels, the player must first complete the previous level. Completing it with a high score allows the player to unlock the level in a higher difficulty mode.

Palette Swap and collections

In order to save time, offering an enemy in a different colour is a good process when it is consistent. Having 3 different difficulties, it was interesting to offer each enemy in 3 additional variations (Bronze, Silver and Gold).

The player also has a collection tab that allows him to see all the enemies he has defeated.

What I Did

I was mainly involved in setting up the system and the gameplay as a gameplay programmer. I also participated in the development of the game design.

My job was to make the system flexible so that the game designers could generate levels easily so a Game Designer can design his own levels and arrange as he wants the enemies and the thumbnails.

What I Learnt

Mobile

This project was the discovery of the mobile universe and its constraints, whether in terms of optimisation or in the need to be playable on as many different devices as possible.

Modularity

As the game is a level-based game, we needed a certain modularity so that we could generate levels quickly.

So for each enemy, you can quickly assign the thumbnails you need to defeat it.
